The world’s smallest theatre

The world’s smallest theatre

Monte Castello di Vibio, a medieval town not far from Todi, Perugia, is among “the most beautiful villages of Italy”.Numerous treasures are guarded within its walls, including the precious jewel of “Teatro della Concordia”, the smallest Theatre in the world, with its 99 seats. It was built in the early 19th century, thanks to nine prominent families in the area. Although there are other theatres with fewer than 100 seats, the Teatro della Concordia is the only one to have accurately created a true miniature reproduction of the typical Italian and European theatres.

This is evident in the characteristic attention to detail, enriched by the materials used and the frescoes, by Cesare Agretti and his young son, that adorn the boxes and the vaulted ceiling. The theatre was made entirely from wood, in pure Goldoni style, and its name was inspired by what was known as “concordia tra i popoli” (harmony between peoples). This was the atmosphere in Europe in that particular historical period, following the French Revolution. It is home to numerous events and a location for celebrating civil ceremony weddings and for hosting meetings.
