Cantina Antonelli San Marco

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Medieval documents bearing witness to this marvelous property tell us that the Longobard court of San Marco de Corticellis was, already then, one of the finest areas for growing grapevines and olive trees. It belonged to the Bishop of Spoleto between the 13th and 14th century and was then sold to a lawyer named Francesco Antonelli in 1881, under whose management it was transformed and improved in many important ways. The land that hosts the vineyards comprises more than one hundred and seventy hectares, all on some of the very best terrain in the Montefalco district, true and proper Grand Cru land which now benefits from thoroughly organic growing methods. The winery, which has recently been enlarged, is located near the ancient Satriano farmhouse, which has also been completely restructured and now offers accommodations. The winery has been run since 1986 by Filippo Antonelli, who has preserved it’s ancient allure in a perfectly modern key. All the wines made here are classic and elegant, beautifully reflecting all that the magnificent Montefalco terroir offers.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The 45 hectares of vineyards are surrounded by woodlands. They sit at an average altitude of 350 meters on hilltops with Pleistocene era and alluvial origins. The ground is deep here, clayey and rich in limestone. The prevailing southwestern exposure and the microclimate ensure that the grapes thrive. The Chiusa di Pannone vineyard, which sits at an altitude of 400 meters, has extraordinary characteristics that make it a cru in and of itself.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

sangiovese, sagrantino, merlot, montepulciano, grechetto, trebbiano spoletino

WINES

Antonelli wines are relaxed, classic and elegant, the fruit of gentle extraction and long aging in wooden barrels of varying sizes. Their Montefalco Sagrantino chiuSa di Pannone is truly one of the finest in its class. The Sagrantino is no less classic, and their PaSSito is as majestic as their Montefalco roSSo riServa is sublime. All of their other labels are also extraordinary.
