Cantina Briziarelli

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Love of the land in all of its possible forms and expressions. This must be the Briziarelli family philosophy. It is only natural that the brilliant enterprises of the Umbrian real estate pioneer would result in the creation of this beautiful estate. Located between Bevagna and Montefalco, right in heart of the most precious Sagrantino district, this is an enchanting place with vineyard-covered hills dotted with ages-old Holm-oak trees and spontaneous flora. It was the combined effort between man and nature that led Cipriano da Piccolpasso to write, in one of his letters to Pope Paul III in 1565, that Bevagna and Montefalco were embellished with “pretty and strong vineyards, cultivated terrain well cared-for and full of healthy fruit”. The new cantina constructed by the winery was designed to blend beautifully into the surroundings and with special care to protect this magnificent landscape which features, higher up, several castles that were built around the year 1000 to protect the area. They still sport their grand Medieval vestiges.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The special geographical location and composition of the terrain, rich in clay and fossil deposits, create the ideal microclimate and conditions for cultivating grapevines. The Bevagna vineyards have an east-south-east exposure and sit at an altitude of about 250 meters. The Montefalco vineyards have a more or less similar altitude and face north.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The lion’s share of the terrains have been planted with autochthonous vines, mostly sagrantino and sangiovese, although the great international vines, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah, have certainly not been ignored.

WINES

The Montefalco Sagrantino Vitruvio is this winery’s great wine. It is vinified for 25 days with its skins in steel vats before being transferred to French oak barriques to age for sixteen months, after which it spends another six months resting in the bottle. A wine with a dense colour, an aroma that exudes blackberries and vanilla, it is rich, well-structured and powerful. The Montefalco rosso Mattone comes from mostly sangiovese grapes to which cabernet sauvignon, merlot and sagrantino have been added.
