Cantina Perticaia

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

The name of the winery was taken from the archaic word for plough, perticaia, a symbol of an innovative agricultural tool and one that the owners of the Perticaia estate hold dear, as they themselves are great innovators. Their ties to the land run deep, they have an innate ability to interpret it in an original fashion and are blessed with long-range vision. These are the secrets that have brought the winery of Guido Guardigli to the forefront of Sagrantino perfection. It all began in the early 1990s with a journey that so thrilled Guido that he was immediately convinced to embark upon the establishment of his own wine enterprise here. A terrain, a vine, a wine. It was here, surrounded by olive tree and vineyard-covered hills dotted with ancient towers, hamlets and medieval castles, that his project took shape and grew. After the land was purchased the planting of new vines was begun and, finally, a modern cantina with all the characteristics of an ancient farmhouse was built to blend into the surrounding landscape with a natural elegance. The quality of the wines that followed were a natural progression of love and care.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The estate has 15 hectares of vineyard, eight of which specialize in sagrantino and two in trebbiano spoletino, a varietal they have a great deal of faith in. They are divided up as follows: “Vigna delle Querce” is bordered by ancient trees that were let stand after they prepared the fields for the new vineyard. “Vigna Attone” is near a stream of the same name and “Vigna Montioni” takes the name of its former owners. All of them are located on the slopes of hills at altitudes of 320 and 350 meters and with ideal southern and southeastern exposure.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

Apart from sagrantino, which grows in the best of their vineyards, they also grow sangiovese, colorino and merlot. They take great care of their trebbiano spoletino as well.

WINES

The Montefalco Sagrantino is the feather in the winery’s cap. It starts out in steel vats and is then moved into barriques for about a year of aging before it is left to refine for another 12 months in the bottle. It is a potent yet elegant wine, full-bodied and complex. As Guargigli always says, it’s “altogether different…”. Their Montefalco roSSo is aromatic, balanced and has a very nice personality.
