Cantina Sasso dei Lupi

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

A huge winery with a truly enormous amount of vineyards scattered about all over Umbria, they produce a sizeable percentage of the regione’s total wine output. This is Sasso dei Lupi, a winery with a new name but of ancient origins. It came about in 1959 and has been producing and selling its wines since 1967. The winery itself is located in Marsciano, near the mediaeval town centre, and boasts modern machinery that is technologically advanced and automated. Apart from the technical part and the machinery used to make the wines, the true heart of Sasso dei Lupi lies in the some 800 members of the cooperative spread over swaths of Perugia and Terni’s finest grape growing territory.

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Altogether there are some 1,000 hectares of vineyards belonging to farmers who, step by step and with great commitment and dedication, have been striving to obtain the finest possible quality wines. Over the past few years the cooperative has embarked on an important vineyard requalification project that has resulted in the planting of new vines on six hundred of its hectares.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The white grapes include grechetto, trebbiano, malvasia, chardonnay and pinot grigio. The black grapes are sangiovese, ciliegiolo, merlot and cabernet sauvignon.

WINES

Among the Colli Perugini DOC wines they make, the white PrimotemPo is certainly worthy of note. It is made with trebbiano, grechetto and chardonnay grapes that offer lovely floral aromas and soft round palates. The red Secondoatto, blends sangiovese and merlot, has a ruby-red colour, smells of fruit with a vague hint of flowers and has a fine dry, lightly tannic body.
