Cantina Bianconi

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

A winery, a name, a territory. It all started here, nourished by the experience of generations of the Bianconi family and from a deep love of the land and its fruits that was passed down from father to son, grandfather to grandson. The area is Assisi, the magnificent city of spiritual passion, of mesmerizing beauty and profound peace. The Bianconi vineyards now cover some seventy hectares and are part of a larger project, the Valle di Assisi Hotel & Resort, which also includes a new winery. Situated at the feet of the City of Saint Francis, the vines reach downwards over the plains and practically touch the 16th century Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The land was once the property of the Benedictine monks of the Abbazia di San Pietro who, deeply committed to their motto “Ora et Labora” (“Pray and Work”), already then dedicated a great deal of energy to the cultivation of grapes for winemaking. It’s an area that has been blessed by nature and “He who rules the earth”, where time passes at its own leisurely rhythm. It is a magical blend of nature, passion… it always has been.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The vineyards spread outwards from the base of Mount Subasio, which, protects the plants and their fruit from the coldest Northern winds with its majestic height and makes sure there is just the right difference in temperature between day and night. The terrain itself was made for grape growing: of medium consistency, somewhat calcareous and with deep-reaching mud. The many ponds of water that dot the area are proof of the abundant flow of underground water.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The youngest vineyard was planted in the year 2000. All of the white grapes are autochthonous, mostly grechetto and a small amount of trebbiano. The black grapes are sangiovese, merlot and cabernet sauvignon.

WINES

grechetto, a noble, and yet at the same time popular white varietal typical of umbria that gleams bright among the assisi doc wines with its dazzling colour, a prelude to a lovely flowery aroma and an honest and fresh flavour. Assisi rosso is a blend of sangiovese and merlot, and sports a deep ruby red colour, a fine aroma of wild berries and spices. Just like giottesco, their limited production of assisi merlot, which is softer and rounder.
