Cantina Adanti

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

The Adanti winery is one of the historical cantinas of the Sagrantino district. Its classic allure is timeless and its modern attributes blend into it with ease. It all started in the 1970s, when furniture retailer Domenico Adanti decided to acquire the villa of Arquata and its surrounding terrain and planted the first vines. His heirs, Daniela, Donatella and Pietro still own the winery today. One of the turning points in the history of the winery came about in 1977, when Alvaro Palini entered their lives. Palini had been a successful tailor in Paris where he was exposed to the very best of French wines and his arrival on the scene was like something from a novel, if not a fairy tale. He soon became one of the winery’s most important influences, a legendary cellarman and one of the most fascinating of men in the Italian wine industry. If you want to get to know Umbrian wines, then a trip to Adanti is imperative.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The main 20 hectare vineyard is located in Arquata, just outside of Bevagna on top of a sunny hill blessed with a calcareous-clayey earth that imbues the grapes with those essences that make for generous and well-structured wines. The 7 hectare vineyard in Campoletame has a clayey limestone soil mixed in with a good dose of sand and enjoys cool breezes. The wines made from these grapes are aromatic and a touch spicy, well structured and with a delicate profile. Their oldest vineyard is located in Colcimino and is a true Grand Cru. It has a clayey-limestone soil containing fine gravel and is, therefore, lighter and more permeable. The wines from these grapes are refined and elegant, minerally, deep and tannic.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

Sagrantino, sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, barbera, grechetto, chardonnay

WINES

The wines made today by Adanti rank among the finest of the district, rife with the most classic and intimate qualities of Sagrantino, Domenico is austere and mineral, has deep and changing aromas and is dense with decisive tannins. It is an exquisite purebred with a grand lineage and comes from the Colcimino cru. Their classic Montefalco Sagrantino is another splendid wine, intensely deep and flavourful. Both wines can be aged for a long time. The other labels made by Adanti are, of course, also marvelous.
