A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

This is a tale of women and their passion. A winery created by women, and still by women run. Free women without worries or business pressures, women who respect the land and it’s ages-old traditions. In the beginning, and here we are talking about the 1800s, there was Rosa. It was she who would go into town on a cart pulled by her white horse to buy the vetriolo (sulphuric acid), the only product she would use to care for her vineyards. She is the symbol that still today represents a family whose commitment has always been for simple, authentic and genuine things. The transition from legendary Rosa to today’s Maria Rosa has been an easy one, and seemingly short because of the continuity of the values of the past which give the present its power. Contemporary tradition, respect for the environment and everything it takes to keep the soil healthy, free from contamination and as lovely as when the sun’s rays first kissed it. Nothing more needs to be said.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The grapes grow at 500 meters high on the steep slopes of a hill surrounded by olive trees and woodlands in rocky soil that gives the wine it’s acidity and soft mineral quality. The vicinity of the Monti Martani ensures that they are well ventilated and that the temperatures are high in summer and low in winter.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

Half of the vineyard is dedicated to sagrantino grapes, the rest to various clones of sangiovese and merlot. A special mention must be given to their trebbiano spoletino, a traditional white grape that grows here on amazing vines that have seen more than a hundred harvests.

WINES

The winery’s Montefalco Sagrantino norMannia is aged for about two years in large French oak barrels. It has a complex and engaging aroma, its flavour is deep and rich in extracts. It ages very well and will improve even further over time. Their very limited production of passito is called PaSSione and is highly sought after. They also make Montefalco roSSo Poggio la Pia, from grapes grown near the church of Santa Maria di Lucciano, and colli Martani SangioveSe il nobile.
