Cantina Castelgrosso

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Although the Mancini family has its origins in Rome, they arrived in the wonderful land of Sagrantino in the late 1800s. Since then they have been fully dedicated to the surrounding environment, the earth and its fruits with great generosity, producing wine, extra-virgin olive oil and cereals. Brothers Augusto and Carlo Mancini run the estate with all the passion of pioneers imbued with the traditional values that have been passed down to them over the generations, and which now also includes all the modern knowhow that has turned it into a true business. The winery itself is located in Castel Ritaldi, a few kilometers from Montefalco, but the vineyards are all within the confines of the Sagrantino DOC wine district.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

All the vineyards are on hilltops with an altitude of 350 meters and with an east-west exposure. The terrain has a medium clayey consistency. In the summer it is hot and in the winter cold, thus encouraging all of the most typical aromas first from the grapes and then from the wines.

WINES

The house Montefalco Sagrantino is made with grapes that are just past their ripeness. The must is left to age in French oak barriques for about two years and then in tonneaux for another six months. The result is an intense wine with tones of ripe fruit and chocolate, and with a full and robust body. The winery’s Montefalco roSSo, which is a blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and sagrantino, ages in barriques for about a year, followed by 6 months in tonneaux.
