Cantina Colleallodole di Milziade Antano Back to: Sagrantino Wine Producers

Cantina Colleallodole di Milziade Antano

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

The winery was founded by Cavalier Milziade Antano, one of the most important figures in understanding the history of Sagrantino wine, and it ranks among the most fascinating artisanal enterprises of the area. It is situated a short distance away from Bevagna and is still a family-run operation headed by the very talented Francesco, the founder’s son, a tireless and meticulous vigneron. Tradition, the land, passion and great sensitivity are the dominating factors that guide daily life here. The winery boasts some of the most beautiful vineyards of the entire district, like the famous Colleallodole cru, with its thousand years of history, that sits in the heart of this area. The vineyards and their small cantina are located along the road that goes up to Montefalco from Bevagna, an enchantingly cozy area which leaves its mark on the great traditional wines it brings forth with faithful authenticity.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

There are 12 hectares of vineyards, all in hilly terrain characterized by a mild climate which attracts cool breezes and sunshine morning and afternoon. The soil has a medium clayey consistency that is neither compact nor heavy, and boasts a healthy dose of fine gravel. The estate includes some of the area’s most lovely vineyards, like the famous Cru Colleallodole.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The great star of the vineyards is, of course, the sagrantino grape, but there is no lack of sangiovese, merlot and cabernet. Of the white grapes worth mentioning is the grechetto.

WINES

Our summary here cannot fail to begin with one of the district’s most lovely and personal Sagrantino. The cru Colleallodole, born from a single vineyard, is aged for 36 months: fifteen of which spent in oak and six of which spent in the bottle. It is a true champion among wines, bewitching, it amazes and even after many years, it remains an enthralling wine of great character and depth. Their Montefalco Sagrantino, aged in large barrels, is no less thrilling and imbued with all the characteristics of the district and its appellation, as are the splendid rosso riserva and the highly appealing rosso. Their Sagrantino Passito also merits a long round of applause.
