A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Còlpetrone is one of the most important wineries of the Montefalco DOCG district, if not of the entire regione. It is one of the brightest stars of the Saiagricola constellation, not just in the winemaking industry, but in general also for its many other quality agricultural products. The winery is located in the charming little village of Marcellano just outside of Gualdo Cattaneo, and is well worth a visit. The town is also famous for its yearly live nativity scene during the Christmas season. The cantina was built a few years ago and is equipped with the very best of modern winemaking technology. It blends in perfectly with the area and its landscape and every detail has been carefully thought out so that the wines produced are truly some of the greatest in the area. The vineyards surround the cantina, creating a truly charming fairytale-like setting in which man and nature blend beautifully together.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The estate boasts 140 hectares of land, of which 63 are covered in vineyards. The muddy ground here has lots of clay mixed in. It enjoys a southeastern exposure, perfect for the proper ripening of the grapes. Its altitude is 350 meters above sea level.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

They grow sagrantino (35 hectares all belonging to the DOCG appellation), sangiovese and merlot.

WINES

Of all the wines they make, their Montefalco Sagrantino gold ranks as one of the best wines in its category, the result of years of winemaking experience, and is rife with original and unique characteristics. It is the winery’s masterpiece and is made only with the most perfect of grapes, and it is therefore only made in the best years. The grapes grow in the Santa Maria del Fico and San Marco vineyards and give the wine an extraordinary richness, intense colour and an aroma filled with red fruit and spices. Their classic Sagrantino, Montefalco roSSo (sangiovese, sagrantino, merlot) and sweet PaSSito are also wines of great class.
