Cantina Colsanto

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Wine is an amazing vehicle of communication, of exchange, experiences and travel. It was this vision of wine that spurred the Livon family to embark on their adventure in Umbria, in the land of Sagrantino. They had been successfully producing wine in the Friuli area when they decided to acquire and enhance their image with the Fattoria Colsanto farming estate. Planting the new vineyard required a substantial investment, as did the creation of the new and very modern cantina, which was needed to make their dream come true. The cantina is lovely. It is housed in a graceful 18th century farmhouse that cannot fail to attract admiring eyes, on a hilltop embellished with vineyards and with cypress trees that lead the way to the entrance. Fattoria Colsanto is also a B&B that offers travellers six finely appointed rooms, and it can also be used as a venue for theme events. It is a magical place with views over Spello and Assisi, just a stone’s throw from the enchanting village of Bevagna. It is well worth a visit.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

20 hectares of vineyards surround the Fattoria, the heart of the estate. The ground here is muddy and sandy with lots of clay mixed in. The vines are densely planted.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The estate grows only black grapes: sagrantino, of course, but also sangiovese, montepulciano and merlot. The first is the most important and occupies about a half of the vineyard’s surface.

WINES

Among the appellation wines their Montefalco Sagrantino stands out for its excellence. Vinified in steel vats, it is then aged in medium to large-sized wooden barrels, followed by aging in the bottle. It is a rich but not heavy wine, with a lovely progression and intriguing fragrances that hint at flowers, small wild berries and spices. The Montefalco roSSo, made with a blend of sangiovese, sagrantino and montepulciano, is no less impressive. It is aromatic and linear, with a fine lingering flavour.
