Cantina del Trasimeno Rocca della Corgna

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

This winery is the product of its territory and history. It is a cooperative whose wines bear all the characteristics of the land around Castiglione del Lago, a rocky promontory that juts into Lake Trasimeno, and whose name bears that of Duca Ascanio della Corgna, a dashing adventurer, architect and military engineer who, through his daring feats, made his hometown famous all over Europe. The view from the 13th century fortress is fantastic, the fingers of the promontory reaching out towards the lake, in turn surrounded by softly rolling hills dotted with olive groves and vineyards. The wines of the Cantina del Trasimeno are produced here, in a cantina that was founded in 1957 by a group of grape growers from the surrounding villages. Their wine is sold under the label Duca della Corgna, and for years it has been synonymous with quality, original products, authenticity and the right price. A viaticum that is both enjoyable and necessary to learn more about Trasimeno wine and its many expressions.

THE VINEYARSD AND TERROIR

The vineyards of the association members are located on the hills around Castiglione del Lago, Panicale, Paciano, Città della Pieve, Pozzuolo, Vaiano and Agello, and sit at an average altitude of between 250 and 350 mt above sea level. The sedimentary soil most of the vines grow on has a medium consistency and are clayey, some with abundant fine gravel and a goodly amount of limestone, but a few of the areas offer looser terrain in which they also thrive.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

Gamay del Trasimeno (or perugino) is a varietal that is similar to grenache and has become a traditional grape for this area. The other grapes that grow here are: sangiovese, grechetto, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, trebbiano toscano and malvasia bianca lunga.

WINES

All of the wines they make are very good and have an enviable quality/price ratio. Il CornIolo (sangiovese, gamay perugino and cabernet sauvignon) is a full-bodied velvety red with traces of fruit and hints of balsamic vinegar. The two gamay wines they make are also splendid: DIvIna vIlla EtIChEtta BIanCa is fresh and crispy, while their barrique-aged EtIChEtta nEra is more complex and spicy. Their GrEChEtto nurICantE has a lovely aroma and BaCCIo DEl BIanCo and BaCCIo DEl rosso deserve special mention.
