Cantina Franco Todini

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

This winery was born of generosity and love. We don’t need to go into a long description of how this winery came into being, suffice it to say that Cavalier Franco Todini decided to make wine so that he could give it away to his many friends and the people that so often came to visit him. As often happens, when the business was handed down in the year 2000 to his son Stefano, a successful businessman in his own right, he decided it was time to stop making just a limited production of personal wine and expanded the little winery into a large quality-winemaking enterprise in the heart of Umbria. The family’s ancient estate was turned into a modern winery that could put out some thirty thousand bottles a year, the vineyards were tended with more attention and, above all, a new and beautiful cellar was built to house all the bottles. The exact location is a fertile area of hilltops around Colvalenza, a stone’s throw from the marvels of Todi, which has always hosted vines and seems to evoke this land’s more spiritual, mystical and, at the same time, carnal side.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The estate’s 70 hectares of vineyards are a fine example of low environmental-impact land management. The ideal microclimate, the peculiarities of the soil and the care with which the winemakers choose their grapes all contribute to the cultivation of the vines and the quality of the grapes they produce.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

They grow a wide variety of grapes, from the traditional grechetto and sangiovese varietals to other more recent additions such as merlot, chardonnay, cabernet franc, pinot grigio and cabernet sauvignon.

WINES

The king of the appellation wines made by the Todini winery is, without a doubt, their Grechetto di todi doc Bianco del cavaliere, with an intensely grand aroma and complex structure, and the ruBro, a sangiovese left to age for a year in barriques. It has a nice dark colour and is beautifully made with an elegant complexity.
