Cantina Il Poggio di Anna Gattobigio

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

The story of Anna, Walter and wine began in the 1970s, when they planted their very first hectares of vineyard and built, sometime later, their cantina. It wasn’t until 1990, however, that they made the big step and began working on improving the quality of their output. They run their business with enthusiasm and passion, working hard to valorize their vines and their wine, even though a small part of their cantina is lent to the transformation of grapes belonging to those who aren’t able to do so themselves. Their winery is equipped with modern technology and some fifty barrels of various sizes, tools which allow them to vinify the different varieties separately so that they can study their characteristics with greater care and get the best out of the hard work they put into cultivating their vineyards. This is an important method, and each stage has a decisive effect on the final product. “Filling a bottle, corking it and putting a label on it is a truly unique sensation because we are bottling a mixture of memories, moments of concern and hopes”, they said. This thoughtful yet simple philosophy is full of values and expectations. They have a lovely tasting room in which they share the fruits of their labour with guests. It is an ideal place in which to “listen to what the wine tells you”.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The vineyards are situated between the areas of Panicale and Castiglione del Lago, an ideal location for its mild climate and the almost constant breezes that gently blow over from the lake.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The first hectares of vineyards, planted in 1972, host grechetto, ciliegiolo and sangiovese vines. In 1984 they planted vermentino and pinot bianco. Today they also grow merlot, cabernet sauvignon and pinot nero.

WINES

Their DOC Trasimeno merlot is first aged in steel tubs and then for 6 months in the bottle before being put on the market. It is a soft yet tapered red with a fine floral and fruity aroma. Their DOC Trasimeno rosso scelto is made much in the same manner using merlot and sangiovese.
