A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

The power of an idea that becomes a dream, a search for excellence which comes from a deep love of the kaleidoscope this landscape presents: these are the factors that blended together to create the Roccaforte winery. They tend to their centuries-old land with all the respect ecological balance demands of an area such as Todi, and the resulting wines are salubrious and have an identity all their own. The sun, rain and wind work hand in hand, the past and the present keep in touch through ancient traditions and modern methods. These are wines that seek to break through the perfection barrier and go a step further to create a perfect synergy of land, microclimate and grapevines. How? With organic methods which are always focused on the physiological wellbeing of the plants and their unique habitat. All of these factors interact in a dreamlike landscape covered in vineyards and dotted with woodlands and olive groves. Not to mention the residence which offers travellers a magical country-chic stay, a wellness centre for relaxation and, finally, a restaurant to close this amazing circle. Or perhaps open it.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

Their eleven hectares of vineyards are cultivated with organic methods and are located near Todi at an altitude of some 350 metres. The hilly area is characterised by terraced slopes and clayey soil that also contains sand. The vineyards have a south-southeastern exposure ideal for the perfect ripening of the grapes.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The area is known for its white grapes, in particular grechetto di Todi (the great star in every sense), followed by trebbiano spoletino and moscato giallo for sweet wines. The black grapes they grow include sagrantino, montepulciano, merlot and sangiovese, which occupies the largest portion of the vineyard.

WINES

Roccafiore has various great labels from their 2010 vintage of the new Todi appellation. Among them their Doc ToDi Superiore FiorFiore, a true purebred which is aged for a year in large oak barrels and represents the finest expression of this Umbrian varietal. Their delicious, if somewhat less complex, FiorDaliSo is made with grechetto and trebbiano spoletino. Of their reds, Doc ToDi Superiore roccaFiore stands out, followed by their roSSo Melograno, a blend of sangiovese, montepulciano and merlot.
