Cantina Tabarrini Back to: Sagrantino Wine Producers

Cantina Tabarrini

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Unpredictable, eclectic and imbued with an almost maniacal passion, Giampaolo Tabarrini is the perfect incarnation of his winery, one of the most intriguing in the Sagrantino district. A descendant of a family of longtime winemakers, Giampaolo is proud of his roots and has a profound attachment to Turrita, the tiny village on the outskirts of Montefalco which the winery calls home. The cantina is modern and sits nestled among the vineyard-covered hillsides surrounded by a landscape crafted by the forces of both man and nature. Tabarrini personally tends to every aspect of the winemaking process – from the grape cluster to the bottle. It has to be perfect, meticulously “just so”, exactly as he was taught. Although still relatively young, Tabarrini wines have nonetheless managed to become some of the brightest stars in the constellation of Montefalco wines. Wine lovers have been given a choice not just of excellent wines, but wines with a true and distinct character, highly personal and enthralling.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The eleven hectares are divided into 9 vineyards and several of the crus are vinified separately to exalt the characteristics of the different areas. The terrains are mostly made up of muddy and clayey ground dotted with river pebbles. Their altitudes, growing methods and exposure vary from vineyard to vineyard.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The greatest of care is reserved for sagrantino. The other black grapes they grow are sangiovese and barbera, while the trebbiano spoletino represents the best of its class in the white grape category.

WINES

The various crus of Montefalco Sagrantino have different characteristics. The Colle alle Macchie is put on the market after aging for six years in the cellar and is rich and powerful, with a clear aroma of fruit, spices and chocolate. campo alla cerqua, which is aged in large oak barrels, is sinuous and elegant while colle grimaldesco is the great classic wine of the house, beautifully structured, with a deep red colour and thrillingly dynamic flavour. Their other wines, from the Sagrantino passito to the Montefalco rosso, are no less remarkable.
