Cantina Tenuta San Rocco

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Tenuta San Rocco, which is reached by passing between a double row of maritime pines, sits on the gently rolling hills that surround Todi and takes its name from an ancient local village. In the 15th century it belonged to the Gerosolimitano di San Giovanni order, which a century later became the Order of the Knights of Malta. They then gifted the land to the Confraternity of Saints John and Rocco who, in turn, passed it along to the Order of the Handmaidens of Mary, who we have to thank for an oratory dedicated to Saint Rocco which is still, to this day, a consecrated chapel. The favourable climate and especially fertile land around the estate has always provided its inhabitants with produce, olive oil and wine. After 1860, the entire property was purchased by a noble family, the marquises of Massei-Bargagli, who built the villa in the eclectic style that was fashionable in those days and a cantina for winemaking on the ground floor and beneath it. In 1934 the estate was acquired by Professor Morghetti, whose offspring still own it today and whose desire it is to maintain the estate’s old vocation both in terms of agriculture and where hospitality is concerned.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The estate boasts a total of fifty-seven hectares of land, twelve of which are vineyards. These slope downwards in a south and southwestern direction at an altitude of 350 metres on soil which has a medium consistency – clayey, sandy and muddy.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

Grechetto prevails here, the district’s most important white varietal, but there is also sangiovese to represent the black grapes. The other grapes cultivated are viogner, falanghina, moscato bianco and some petit verdot.

WINES

Following the order of the grape varieties grown, much importance is given to DOC Todi Grechetto, which shows great expressive qualities, flavour and breadth in their POGGiO Marcigliano. It can be fearlessly paired with great versatility, even daring. The reds include Sangiovese Moretto, Sangiovese riserva Palobaccio, and Merlot riserva villa San Rocco.
