A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

1960, 13, 3531. No, these are not numbers you should play in the lottery, although, why not? These are the numbers and figures that mark the history of one of Umbria’s oldest traditional wine cooperatives. Established in 1963 by 13 illuminated winemakers, the registration number on their official documents reads 3531, and this winery has influenced the enological, economic and social life of the surrounding area for more than 50 years. Winning numbers, to say the least! Their first vintage dates to the 1970s and from that time onwards it has been a story of continuous growth. They now have hundreds of members, a modern winery and many hectares of vineyards spread out all over the area. The real turning point was actually recent, in the last ten years, when they purchased cutting-edge technology for the production, bottling, aging and warehousing of their wines.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The vineyards of the many members of the cantina are located in Bettona, Assisi, Cannara, Bevagna, Torgiano, Spello, Deruta, Bastia, Giano, Perugia and Valfabbrica, for a total of some 185 hectares. The terrains that bring forth the fruit of the vine is ground typical of the Monte Martano area, somewhat clayey interspersed with fine draining gravel and featuring differing depths.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The most common grapes grown are those belonging to the DOC Colli Martani, which includes trebbiano, grechetto, malvasia, chardonnay and sauvignon for the white grapes; cabernet sauvignon, merlot, montepulciano, barbera, sangiovese and ciliegiolo for the black grapes. The most prevalent are the trebbiano and grechetto on the one hand, sangiovese and merlot on the other.

WINES

The product range is truly varied and is sold in containers of varying sizes. The appellation wines are all DOC Colli Martani which includes the typical Grechetto, with its robust and structured body, the more delicate trebbiano, the austere SanGioveSe and the powerful SanGioveSe riServa. The reds age in barriques for variable lengths of time according to the wine’s needs.
