A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

Lungarotti is “the” most classic name in Umbrian wines and represents some of the most important moments in the history of enology in our regione. The winery was conceived by the genius of Giorgio Lungarotti in 1960 and today is run by the great women of his life: his wife Maria Grazia, who manages the Fondazione, and his daughters Chiara and Teresa. Wine, culture and hospitality. The Lungarotti universe is not limited to the nectar in their bottles: there is the Wine Museum, famous the world over, the Le Tre Vaselle Resort & Spa, an elegant noble home that dates to the 17th century that is embraced by the medieval walls of the ancient town of Torgiano, and then there is the Poggio alle Vigne, an agriturismo nestled among the rows of grapevines and ideal for a holiday of nature, peace and relaxation. The estate is committed to eco-friendly cultivation and respect for the environment. In fact, theirs was the very first winery to use leftovers to produce energy for their winemaking activities, which have always followed traditional methods wisely blended with innovative technology. Traditional and modern, ecological and technological, economy and culture: the Lungarotti label is all of this.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The vineyards in Torgiano and Montefalco are perfect examples of their districts’ most important characteristics. Vigna Monticchio, on the hills of Brufa, is one of the most exemplary crus of the region, a sort of 24 hectare amphitheatre with a southwestern exposure that was once covered by the waters of Lake Villafranco, which, when it drained, left behind a sand-rich and clayey soil, while the earth of the lower area is looser, with muddy deposits rich with limestone.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The grape varieties grown by Lungarotti are many. Among the most representative of the black grapes are the classic sangiovese and canaiolo, sagrantino at Montefalco, grechetto and trebbiano for the whites. But there is also a wide variety of other autochthonous and international grapes.

WINES

Needless to say, the range of wines produced is also highly varied, all of them, of course, excellent. Among the finest of their production is Torgiano rosso riserva rubesco vigna MonTicchio, a great classic made with sangiovese and canaiolo grapes. It merits a place of honour for its cru, which has withstood the test of time, but also for having made Umbria famous for its wine the world over. Torgiano bianco riserva vigna il Pino is a splendid wine, as are Torre di giano and rubesco. Their rosso di MonTefalco and sagranTino are also fine examples of their class.
