A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

At a time when increasing numbers of wineries seem to pop up on the scene, it is worth remembering those which did not open their doors yesterday but represent many long years of hard work, commitment, investment, sacrifice and passion. This is the case of the Gorettis, a family who has forever been dedicated to the land and has known how to carve itself a prestigious niche on the regione’s enological scene. Step by step, without hurrying, with long-range vision and respect for the land and its own very special pace. The Goretti winery is a family-run business that sits on the panoramic hills overlooking Pila, just a few kilometers from Perugia, hills which have always welcomed vineyards with open arms. A few years ago, the Gorettis also bought land in another great Umbrian winemaking district: Montefalco, where they built another winery and planted vineyards to make wine under the Fattoria Le Mura Saracene label. This new vineyard, needless to say, benefits from the same commitment and dedication the family gives to the Perugian winery, with the same wise blend of traditional methods from times past and modern technology that looks to the future.

The winery’s vineyards grow over hilly terrain and feature a 13th century tower that is on all of the Goretti labels. The land here is particularly fine for growing wine grapes, rich with limestone, iron and trace elements. If we add the vineyards in Montefalco, then they have, all told, some 50 hectares. From an agronomical point of view, their pest management and integrated pest management systems are very important to the safeguarding of both the environment and the health of the grapevines.

The varietals grown are grechetto and sagrantino, two of the most important of the region, as well as sangiovese, merlot, ciliegiolo, trebbiano and chardonnay.

WINES

Among the Goretti wines, distinguished for its quality and long history, is Colli Perugini rosso l’Arringatore. Made with sangiovese, merlot and ciliegiolo grapes, it is the very symbol of the winery, a bewitching wine with an intense fruity aroma blended with spicy and balsamic hints, in the mouth it is round and velvety. Their other DOC and DOCG labels are no less intriguing: Montefalco sagrantino, Montefalco rosso, a classic grechetto and a flavourful Chardonnay.
