Tenuta Col Falco

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

The winery, founded by Giovanni Ruggeri and named after him, is one of Montefalco’s petit domaines with ancient roots in the tradition of winemaking. Giovanni is now flanked by his son, Giuliano, who shares his passion and commitment to the work at hand and will guide the winery into the future with a solid grounding of respect for tradition and the quality of the wines they make. The new cantina, with its huge twelve to twenty-five hectoliter wooden barrels, is a classic and relaxing place to be. It is located in the heart of the Umbrian valley on a hilltop that dominates the entire splendor of the Montefalco district. The Ruggieri familly feels that “producing wine means following a path that unites man and the land, that is able to reflect the empathy of the past, when man lived in harmony with his environment, only now it also has the benefit of research and innovation to help reassess the ancient traditions”. A word of advice… to better understand what they mean, get yourselves a glass.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The estate only has six hectares of vineyards, two of which were planted in the 1960s. The Ruggieri family insists on tending to the vineyards by themselves. It is a heartfelt passion that guarantees quality results.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The winery includes 3 hectares and 2,000 metres of sagrantino, one hectare and 5,000 metres of sangiovese, 7,000 metres of merlot and a further 5,000 metres divided into white grechetto and trebbiano grapes. Talk about precision.

WINES

Their Sagrantino obviously stands out. It is vinified in steel and then left to age in 25 hectoliter barrels that imbue it with a complex aroma of wild berries and spices, while the flavour is austere and very satisfying… artisanal yet dressed in its Sunday best. The roSSo di Montefalco they make is a blend of sangiovese, merlot and sagrantino. It is a real delight to drink, with a fine and lingering fruity flavour.
