Terre de’ Trinci

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

This is the story of man and wine that begins many years ago, a story that bears witness to the important changes the district has undergone. It all started halfway through the last century when a handful of winemakers decided to unite their efforts and form a collective. Things really began to take a turn for its members in the early 1990s, when the winery changed its name to Terre de’ Trinci, in honour of one of the most historically important ruling families of the city of Foligno, and embarked on a major renovation project which masterfully linked tradition to the present and the present to the future. This “new” winery was, and still is, run by its president, Lodovico Mattoni, one of the most interesting figures in the sagrantino panorama. He was a pioneer of sagrantino back in the 1970s with a Secco version when everyone else was still using it to make great Passito wines, and it was thanks to him that this great wine would achieve its own DOC appellation. In 1996, the winery was the first in Umbria, and second in Italy, to adopt the Sistema di Qualità Certificato UNI EN ISO 9002 (Certified Quality System). Terre de’ Trinci has vineyards in various locations in the area where the hilltops tell the story, better than a thousand words ever could, of the hard work and pride man has always had for this land.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The winery is located on the outskirts of Foligno, but its180 hectares of vineyards grow their grapes in Bevagna, Montefalco and Gualdo Cattaneo. The vineyards are twenty years old, on average, and the soil into which the roots burrow goes from being clayey to having a medium consistency.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The grapes they grow, in order of quantity, are: sagrantino, sangiovese, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and grechetto.

WINES

As we mentioned, they place great importance on their Sagrantino, made in various versions which include the very select Ugolino. This is a wine of great character, made from low yields and left to macerate with its skins to then age in barriques for about a year. It has a heady aroma that is intensely fruity and spicy and a luxurious flavour with lots of tannins. Less potent but made in much the same manner is their “basic” Sagrantino. The Montefalco roSSo riServa, Montefalco roSSo and grechetto dei colli Martani are also fine wines.
