Terre della Custodia

A PORTRAIT OF THE WINERY

The Farchioni family has been cultivating the earth for many years and is a very successful producer of their own brand of olive oil that is sold in supermarkets and niche stores all over the country. Since 1780, generations of Farchionis have worked the land and with the passing of time they have also brought modern technology to their mainstay businesses: as winemakers, as extra-virgin olive oil producers and merchants, and as producers of flour. Their winery is a modern cantina in the true sense of the word, and their wines are sold with the label Terre de La Custodia. Completely renovated in 2003, it sits surrounded by the green of its vineyards in the shadow of the tower of the fortress of Gualdo Cattaneo. The wine they make here is stylistically impeccable, original and modern.

THE VINEYARD AND TERROIR

The family’s vineyards spread out over 138 hectares, making it one of the largest wineries in all of Umbria. Half of them are located in Petroro, Duesanti and Torrececcona, on the outskirts of Todi, at an altitude of 700 mt above sea level. The earth there is gravelly and full of minerals, perfect for growing white grapes. The other vineyards are all located within the Montefalco DOC and DOCG district just outside of Gualdo Cattaneo, where the earth is clayey and has a substratum of lignite.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES GROWN

The grapes they grow in these vineyards are: grechetto, sagrantino, merlot, sangiovese and montepulciano.

WINES

The wines of the Terre de La Custodia label that best represent their appellations of origin, are Grechetto dei colli Martani, a highly enjoyable fresh and aromatic wine, rosso di Montefalco, a soft and very pleasant wine, and the Montefalco saGrantino, the district’s great red that they also make as a successful Passito, in two exquisite versions – secco and the super exubera.
